Stainless Steel Alloys

Chromium is a metal, when added to steel makes it stainless. The greater the amount of chrome in steels the more corrosion resistant or stainless it becomes. There is minimum chromium content of approx 12% to convert steel to stainless and therefore any steel containing more than this amount of chromium is referred to as Stainless Steel. The most important stainless steel welding electrodes and base metals contains large amounts of chromium and nickel and some type’s additional molybdenum. Those steel are generally non-magnetic and are referred to, technically as Austenitic Stainless Steels. This group of steels is generally, easily welded and they do not require the use of preheat.
